Weird & wonderful wild ginger

Asarum_caudatum_flower_webAsarum caudatum goes by many common names: wild ginger, western wild ginger, long-tailed wild ginger or British Columbia wild ginger.
Here’s what you need to know. It’s a native plant of BC. Its leaves do smell like ginger when they’re rubbed or crushed. And it’s not at all related to the ginger that you buy at the market — that, my friends, is Zingiber officinale, native to India, China and other parts of Asia.Asarum caudatum leaves
That said, Asarum caudatum is a fascinating evergreen with beautiful heart-shaped leaves and a very unusual flower.
It tends to self-pollinate. And ants help disperse the seeds that it produces. But it more often reproduces vegetatively. Overall, it’s just a wonderful, beautiful, eccentric addition to the flora of BC.
